The Government of India has recently proposed a plan to allow the retrofitting of old cars with CNG kits. This plan could revolutionise the way we travel, providing a more affordable and eco-friendly alternative to petrol and diesel cars. In this article, we’ll explore what CNG is, the benefits and challenges of retrofitting, the criteria set by the government, and the potential impact of its implementation.

What is CNG?

CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas and is a clean-burning alternative fuel source. It is composed primarily of methane and is derived from natural gas or biogas sources. CNG is used in a variety of applications, including vehicle fuel, heating, and cooking. It is considered to be much more environmentally friendly than traditional petrol and diesel, as it produces fewer emissions and is more efficient.

Government of India’s Proposed Plan

The Government of India has proposed a plan to allow CNG kits to be retrofitted to old cars. This would enable owners of older vehicles to switch to a more affordable and eco-friendly fuel source. The government has stated that the kits will be available from authorised dealers and workshops, and it is expected that the approval will be granted soon.

Benefits of Retrofitting

There are numerous benefits to retrofitting CNG kits to old cars. Firstly, it is much more affordable than petrol or diesel, making it a great option for those on a tight budget. Additionally, it produces fewer emissions, making it a much more environmentally friendly option. Finally, it is more efficient than petrol or diesel, meaning that it can help to reduce fuel costs.

Challenges of Retrofitting

Although retrofitting CNG kits to old cars can be beneficial, there are also some challenges involved. Firstly, the cost of the kits can be quite high, so it may not be feasible for everyone. Additionally, the kits can be difficult to install, as they require specialised knowledge and tools. Finally, the performance of the car may be affected, as the CNG kits are not designed for older cars.

Criteria for Retrofitting

The Government of India has set certain criteria for retrofitting CNG kits to old cars. Firstly, the car must have been manufactured before April 1, 2016. Additionally, the car must have passed the emission tests conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Finally, the car must have a valid pollution under control (PUC) certificate.
