New Delhi. Former Australia captain Ian Chappell wants the world’s leading players to unite and make such a plan, in which work should be done to save the future of Test cricket. India captain Virat Kohli should be given the charge. Chappell, one of the best captains of cricket, believes that Test playing countries cannot produce good cricketers for the longest format unless they are motivated to play cricket fast.
Ian Chappell wrote on Cricinfo, ‘The skills required to excel at Test level need to be acquired at an early age. Then it is improved by tough competition. This can be achieved only if there is a functional development system in Test playing countries. He wrote, ‘If this continues, then Test cricket can remain alive. Otherwise it will lead to its downfall.
conference needs to be held
According to the former Australia captain, for this the players need to organize a summit led by Kohli. He said, ‘If his (necessary for Tests) skills are hone properly then a player can adapt to any format of the game. Kohli is a good example of this. If the players really believe that Test cricket is the pinnacle then they need to talk for a summit on the future of the game. For this, nothing will be better than making Kohli the spokesperson.
Revenue priority affected
They are disappointed by the decline in the skills of the cricketers being groomed at the grassroots level. Ian Chappell said, ‘The system which was in practice in cricket for many decades, in which the player gradually progressed from school cricket through several levels to reach international cricket.’ “Prioritization of revenue has affected the skill of the players, which is being given less consideration,” he said. He said, ‘It is said that the skills of the players have improved. This comment needs clarification. If it refers to batsmen being more powerful hitters, then it is true. But do batsmen have better technique to withstand tough spells of bowling for longer periods? In most cases the answer is no.
More between Tests than in other formats
He said, ‘It can be seen in the same way that the level of fielding has improved, but has there been an improvement in catching catches at slips? The answer is no. He said that the Test series is going on between India and England. Meanwhile, the Hundred, T20 and ODI matches are being played in England. Players can be called for this at any time. Even after this, it is being said that the test is the preferred format of all the boards.
