England Test captain Joe Root on Tuesday said all-rounder Moeen Ali has the ability to lead his team to match-winning goals with both bat and ball. Root’s remarks came after Moeen Ali was included in the England squad for the upcoming second Test against India starting on Thursday at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Root said in the virtual press conference, “Moeen has the ability to win matches with bat and ball, he has proved it. He plays his best cricket when he is enjoying it and he is full of confidence. – It certainly looks the same at the moment, the way he has led Birmingham Phoenix is headed.”
Root continued, “If Moeen plays I would happily give him a big responsibility because he responds very well to him. He is a leader within the dressing room, a great personality, he is with him on the field and in the dressing room. I bring players with me, so it would be great to have him back.”
The first test match between India and England ended in a draw due to rain. England coach Chris Silverwood also admitted that apart from Joe Root, the batsmen need to contribute more to ease the pressure on the English captain.
The English captain said, “We have tried to manage things in the best way possible with time and I have always been a big fan of Moeen. I think he is an amazing cricketer across all formats, I think he It’s a great ambassador for the game. It’s wonderful to see him back in Tests and have him back in the Test team.”
