FIH Pro Hockey League: Second defeat against Netherlands shattered India’s hopes of winning the title, women’s team also disappointed

The Indian men’s hockey team’s hopes of winning the FIH Pro League title were shattered with a 1-2 loss to the Netherlands in the second match on Sunday. Earlier, India had lost 1-4 in the shoot-out against Netherlands in the first match on Saturday. On the other hand, in the women’s section, the Indian team was disappointed and Olympic silver medalist Argentina defeated India’s women’s hockey team 3-2 to win the title.

Netherlands won the Men’s Pro League title

Let us tell you that to keep the hope of winning the title, India needed to register a win against the Netherlands but it did not happen. Netherlands have captured the men’s title with 35 points from 14 matches. While Olympic champions Belgium finished second with 35 points from 16 matches, India finished third with 30 points from 16 matches. On the other hand, in the women’s section, the Indian team remained in third place. Argentina topped and the Netherlands got second place there.

Despite leading within 30 seconds, India lost the match.

If we talk about this match, then India got off to a great start and took the lead within 30 seconds thanks to a field goal from Abhishek. After hitting four defenders, Abhishek scored the goal by hitting Dutch goalkeeper Mauritz Wieser. The Netherlands then leveled in the seventh minute after a penalty corner was converted by Zip Jensen. There was a tough competition between the world number three team Netherlands and the fourth number team India.

Netherlands got another penalty corner in the 11th minute which was thwarted by goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. Netherlands got three more penalty corners but they too failed to penetrate the Indian defence. Harmanpreet Singh failed to score on India’s penalty corner in the 16th minute. India got two consecutive penalty corners two minutes before half time but the team could not convert them into goals and this was the turning point. In the 45th minute of the third quarter, Jorit Kroon gave the Netherlands a 2-1 lead. After this India could not even match this score.

The women’s team also disappointed

The way the women’s team defeated strong team Argentina on Saturday in a penalty shootout after equalizing it. After that it was expected that this team can create history by winning the title. In this second match with Argentina too, India took the lead through Salima Tete’s goal in the 23rd minute. But in the 38th minute, Delfina Thom converted a pass from Sofia Tocalino to level her team.

Argentina then dominated and scored 2 goals within 3 minutes, scoring 2 penalty corners and taking a 3-1 lead. Eugenia Trinchinetti first scored in the 41st minute and then Augustina Gozzerlani scored two minutes later. But the Indian players were also not going to give up without being challenged. Three minutes after the third goal, Deep Grace Ekka scored a penalty corner to reduce the margin of defeat to 2-3.
