New Delhi. The unemployment rate in the country rose to 13.3 per cent in July-September last year from 8.4 per cent in the same period a year ago. This is stated in the labor market survey conducted at regular intervals by the National Statistics Office. The unemployment rate refers to the percentage of people in the workforce who have not found any employment. According to the eighth labor force survey to be conducted at regular intervals, the unemployment rate in April-June 2020 was 20.9 percent.

The labor force participation rate for all ages stood at 37 per cent in the July-September quarter last year, according to the survey. It was 36.8 percent in the same period a year before that. While it was 35.9% in April-June 2020, the National Statistical Office (NSO) had started the Fixed Term Labor Force Survey (PLFS) in April 2017.

Based on the PLFS, a quarterly bulletin is issued giving the estimate of the labor force. It provides information on worker population ratio (WPR), labor force participation rate (LFPR), unemployment rate, employment under the current weekly status (CWS) and work-industry distribution of workers based on the broad situation.
