50 days after its release on September 30, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 1 has grossed Rs 500 crore globally, the second highest after Rajinikanth-starrer ‘2.0’. It is only the second Tamil film to achieve this. The film’s producer Lyca Productions tweeted, “50 glorious days of the hashtag-Ponniyin Selvan and still going strong.”

Chiyaan Vikram, who plays the lead in the ensemble cast, tweeted, ‚ÄúSomeone please play a pinch for me..and tell me this is not a dream. Hashtag-Ponniyinselvan.”

A historical saga of the life and times of Tamil emperor Raja Raja Chola, the Mani Ratnam film was long in the making and generated all-round curiosity about its fate at the box office. However, ‘PS1’ with its galaxy of big-ticket actors including Aishwarya Rai was loved by the audience, young and old.

The film now finds its place in the list of South Indian blockbusters – two ‘Baahubali’ films, ‘RRR’ and ‘KGF Chapter 2’ – that have crossed the Rs 500 crore barrier.

‘PS-1’ is far behind ‘RRR’ and ‘KGF2’, both of which crossed the Rs 1,000-crore mark in 2022, but now it has overtaken ‘Brahmastra: Part One Shiva’ and ‘ Standing firm ahead of ‘The Kashmir Files’. The sequel to ‘Ponniyin Selvan-1’ is expected to release within six to nine months, after Mani Ratnam completes the shooting of both the film’s installments in one go.
