Javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra’s historic achievement of winning an Olympic gold medal has been included by World Athletics in 10 magical moments of track and field in Tokyo. The 23-year-old Chopra had on Saturday won the country its first Olympic medal in athletics with a throw of 87.58m.
He is only the second Indian athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games. According to the World Athletics website, “Only those who knew the sport very closely knew about Neeraj Chopra before the Olympic Games but after the javelin throw victory in Tokyo and India’s first gold medalist in athletics in Olympic history.” Chopra’s name went on everyone’s tongue.”
World Athletics said Chopra had 143,000 followers on Instagram before the Olympics, but now has 3.2 million followers.
This has made him the only track and field athlete in the world with the most followers. Gymnast legend Nadia Comanechi is among former veterans who congratulated Chopra on Twitter.
