WTA Tour Trophy: Mayar Sherif becomes first Egyptian player to win WTA Tour tournament

WTA Tour Trophy : Mayar Sherif has won the title of the Parma Ladies Open Tennis Tournament. The 26-year-old sherif made history as she defeated top seed Maria Sakkari in straight sets in the title match. Sherif has now become the first Egyptian player to win a WTA Tour level event. Sherif won the first title of her career by defeating Sakkari 7-5, 6-3 in the final. This is the first time she has defeated a player in the top 10.

Earlier, both the semi-finals and the final were held on Saturday as the match was postponed due to rain. Sherif had earlier defeated sixth seed Anna Bogdan 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the semi-finals, while world-ranked Sakkari defeated Danka Kovinic 7-5, 6-2. Expressing her happiness after winning the title, the sheriff said that it means a lot to my country. I am very happy and excited. I didn’t expect it.

Significantly, this victory was not so easy for the 74th-ranked sheriff in the world rankings. She had to play two consecutive matches in the same day. Whereas their semi-final match was to be held on Friday. However, she performed well in both the matches. In the final, the Sherif scored 13 break points and won six of them. She said, “I am tired, today was a very difficult day for me, I spent many hours on the court. But I am happy that I was able to overcome them and win.”
