He hoisted the tricolor on the strength of his performance. Tokyo Olympian Deepak Punia won the bronze medal in the Under-23 Asian Wrestling Championship 2022 in Kyrgyzstan by defeating Maksat Satyabeldi in the 86kg freestyle weight category. However, the Indian contingent was expecting a better performance in the tournament from the World Championship silver medalist.

In the opening two rounds, 23-year-old Punia lost to gold medal winner Azizbek Faizulaev of Uzbekistan and Nurtilek Karipbaev of Kyrgyzstan. However, according to the report of Olympic.com, he defeated Satyabeldi of Kazakhstan to win the bronze medal.

Last month, Deepak Punia was included in the Indian wrestling team for the Commonwealth Games 2022 along with Tokyo 2020 medalists Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar Dahiya. India won a total of 25 medals in the Under-23 tournament in this event, including 10 gold medals. The eight-day Continental Championship concluded on Sunday.
