Ashleigh Barty, the world’s number one tennis player, has shocked the tennis world by announcing her retirement from the sport at the age of just 25. Barty had recently become the first Australian woman to reach the top of the rankings since Evonne Goolagong in 1976. Despite having achieved much success in her short career, Barty decided to retire in order to pursue other interests. This article will discuss her rise to the top, her reasons for retirement, and the future of women’s tennis in her wake.

Rise of Ashleigh Barty

Barty began playing tennis at the age of four and, by the time she was 14, was ranked in the top 10 of the junior rankings. She initially made her mark in doubles, winning the 2013 French Open girls’ doubles title alongside compatriot Olivia Rogowska. Barty then turned her attention to singles, making her breakthrough in 2019 when she won the French Open and reached the final of the US Open. She won the WTA Finals in Shenzhen the same year, claiming her first ever WTA singles title.

Early Career Success

In the following year, Barty took her career to the next level. She won the Miami Open, the Birmingham Classic, and the Nottingham Open. She also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and the WTA finals, while claiming her first ever Grand Slam singles title at the French Open. Barty also made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open and the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships.

Unprecedented World Number One Ranking

In 2020, Barty achieved the unthinkable, becoming the world’s number one ranked tennis player. This was a remarkable feat, as it had been 44 years since an Australian woman had held the top spot. Barty had a remarkable season, winning the Yarra Valley Classic and the Qatar Open. She also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals of the US Open.

Reasons for Retirement

Despite her success, Barty decided to retire from the sport in 2021. She cited her desire to pursue other interests as the main reason for her decision. She stated that she wanted to take some time off to focus on her mental health and to explore other opportunities. Barty also expressed her gratitude for being able to make a living from playing tennis and thanked her fans for their support.
